Canopy was born out of an ever changing world, where rapid urbanization created a disconnect between rural agriculture and the urban population centers of the world.
Canopy is an integration company that integrates cutting-edge technologies with unique ideas to create a cohesive eco-friendly and sustainable solution,
The United Nations estimates that the world’s population will hit nearly 10 billion by the year 2050. Almost 70 per cent of those people will live in and around urban cities.
This disconnect leads to multiple problems inherent to traditional farming methods and locations:
Environmental impact: Transporting food the distance between farmlands and consumers emits large amounts of greenhouse gasses and contributes to global warming, the solution is as simple as bringing food closer to the consumers.
Deforestation and water scarcity: Traditional land farming methods require large amounts of land and water, both scarce resources, and as the population and therefore demand increases, drastic measures such as destroying forest land and harming the environment is taking place to make room for farmland. Canopy utilizes space and water-efficient modern farming methods such as column farming which uses up to 6x less space for a higher, richer yield, and up to 90 percent less water — all without pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers
Food quality and safety: Pesticides are something most people worry about in their food, but it is impossible for produce to cross certain distances without a certain level of pesticides or preservatives which not only adds to environmental impact but also has possibly harmful impacts on consumers, which wouldn’t be a problem if consumers had fresh urban produce readily available.
Long term environmental impacts: other major farming issues such as eutrophication and algae blooms caused by fertilizer runoff in lakes and rivers damages already fragile marine ecosystems. Bioaccumulation harms entire food chains and is extremely hard to combat.
